Do you have a story everyone says should be a book?
You don't have to be a great writer to be a successful author.
You just have to be savvy enough to hire a skilled ghost writer to bring your subject to life.
According to a recent New York Times article, “Up to a half the books on any non-fiction best-seller list are written by someone other than the name on the book.”
The reason is simple: being an expert, an eyewitness, or a celebrity does not necessarily mean you're also a skilled writer or communicator, or that you have the time to devote to the writing.
Ghost writers typically work for five types of clients.
- The expert who writes to preserve and share accumulated knowledge.
- Someone with an extraordinary first-person experience to relate who lacks writing skills.
- A celebrity or aspiring celebrity who wants a book to memorialize, launch or enhance a career.
- The would be author with a great story to tell, but not the necessary compelling storytelling skills.
- The executive or business owner who is a great speaker who doesn't have the time to translate spoken materials into good prose.
You don't think all those famous politicians write their
books by themselves, do you? They don't have time to do the writing, but
they love to tell a good story. A ghostwriter can listen to the stories
and write them in an engaging, appealing, logical, exciting or even
terrifying way. A talented ghost writer can mimic your written voice perfectly.
The ghostwriter compensates for any skill or
knowledge the author lacks. In return for their expertise, ghosts are
typically paid a cash fee or hourly rate, plus sometimes a percentage of the author’s
royalties. In return, the ghost usually takes a vow of silence.
Occasionally an author will give permission for a ghost to reveal their
role in a project or share the book credit with the ghost, but
typically, that's not the deal. A ghost has to honor whatever contract
they negotiate with an author, agent or publisher. It's a different
arrangement from co-authors who share the risks and rewards of a
project. It's "writer for hire."
If you are not a skilled writer, but have expert
knowledge or an extraordinary story to share, or seek to launch or
enhance your image, that’s when you should call a ghostwriter. Good
ghost writers are highly prized and don't come cheap, so be prepared to
pay well to get the best.
I have served as a ghostwriter for
several popular books and many executive articles and speeches. I call myself the
"ghostwriter for the angels" because one of those books recounts a
doctor's deathbed experiences with patients who see angels when they're
dying.
If you have a story to tell, I may be able to help you
write it. Choosing a project like that takes into account whether I'm in
alignment with the story and its values. If I'm not the right person
for you, I have several excellent ghost writer friends I can recommend,
so please feel free to contact me about your ghost writing project.
I
specialize in identifying your voice and writing to fit your style and
personality. It's like it flows directly from
the vision in your head through my fingers and onto the screen.
